With the GB Men and Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Teams having both secured their qualification for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, the penultimate day of the 2015 European Wheelchair Basketball Championships saw further success for the nation - with the election of British Wheelchair Basketball Chairman Malcolm Tarkenter to Vice President of IWBF Europe.

Tarkenter, whose involvement in the sport spans more than 40 years, is a retired GB Paralympian, with a career highlight of a silver medal from Atlanta.  He has been Chairman of the British Wheelchair Basketball Association since 2008.

The elections were made as part of the IWBF Congress, held during the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, at the University of Worcester this week.

Fellow Brit, Maurice Hammerton also stood unopposed to join the board as lead of grassroots development.

Malcolm Tarkenter, on being appointed as Vice President to the IWBF Europe board said:

“It is a great honour to be appointed to the Board of IWBF Europe as Vice President. I intend to use my role to influence the sport across Europe, ensuring that we reflect the needs of the representative countries and support the development and growth of the sport.”

IWBF Europe is responsible for overseeing the delivery of competition and participation opportunities for the European Wheelchair Basketball community.

IWBF Europe will close the congress on the eve of the finals of the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, with GB men already securing their place in the final, where they will defend their European title against Turkey and GB Women will battle for bronze position (on Sunday 6th September).
